If you read my previous post you are aware of my participation in NaNoWriMo. I’m writing this today to say that I have failed, and that I will not continue my work on the project. There are multiple reasons for this and I’m going to explain here why I don’t consider this to be a loss for me.
Over the last few weeks/month I’ve been working on quite a few projects. Wanted: Igor and Kvasir Games (Yes, I am listing them as two different project as we are still working on the business aspect of the company) have been my top priorities, while I’ve also worked on (among other things) a Oculus Rift project for Culture Night, a tutorial project for ChainJam, and a couple of personal game-related projects. Then I topped all this up with NaNoWriMo and a project with some Swedish friends, all while working a 30-hours-per-week job.
All this combined simply got too much for me to handle and I got into a circle where I always felt like I was just trying to catch up. The result was that instead of giving each project the attention it deserved, I hardly worked on any of them because I was behind anyway. I just had to cut some of them away to be able to focus on the rest. The reason NaNoWriMo was put on the list of things to cut was that, while I liked the story, I didn’t like the way I was telling it. It started feeling forced and random, and I didn’t like it when my characters had to take decisions not matching their personalities simply to drive the plot forward. I spent quite some time trying to fix this and it really hurt my word count. The infamous words of a certain demonized night elf comes to mind, and I will need to start preparations earlier next year if I am to have any chance of succeeding then.
So what will I do with all this time I now have? Why, start something new, I suppose! Oh, don’t give me that look. This time it is a 2-week project doing something that I enjoy, namely making games. And as an added bonus, I get to use the IP from the new Lego movie! Who could pass up a chance like that? Anyway, here are the details. A Norwegian newspaper is in the process of making a portal for game devs in Norway and they are hosting a game jam. Their sponsors are WB and Lego, and prizes include cash and exposure. I don’t expect to win anything, but it’s still a pretty neat opportunity. If you want to participate, check it out! The main requirement is that someone in your group has a Norwegian address.
Anyway, I just wanted to keep you all posted on the situation. Thanks for reading!
